The Workshop: Making Thinking Visible: Assessment Through Art
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore how student-created zines can transform assessment from product-focused to process-revealing. Through creating their own mini-zines, educators will experience firsthand how art-making documents learning journeys, captures complex thinking, and provides authentic windows into student understanding. We'll examine practical frameworks for implementing and assessing creative learning artifacts that honor both content mastery and artistic expression across all subject areas.
Required Materials: A piece of paper (copy paper, lined paper, construction paper, anything will work) to be able to write on, fold and tear.
Your Workshop Facilitator: Hannah cohen
Hannah has taught visual arts and arts integration at City Neighbors Hamilton for the last 13 years. Hannah partners with K-8 educators across all subject areas to design and implement lessons where art and content learning strengthen each other. She holds a BFA and MAT from Maryland Institute College of Art, where she has served as adjunct faculty, embedding arts integration strategies into a graduate course on "Literacy Integration in Visual Arts." Hannah has led professional development workshops on arts integration through City Neighbors and Arts Every Day, sharing practical approaches for making student understanding visible through creative expression.
